It all began when a visually impaired women living in Hawaii wanted a guide dog that wouldn’t cause the allergy issues every other dog was for her husband.

Now, the reason she selected Australia had to do with their quarantine laws. Australia is an island with very strict quarantine laws, in fact they are much more strict than the same laws in Hawaii. And that meant dogs exported to Hawaii from Australia could go home with no quarantine.

LabradoodleIn response to the women’s request, over a two year period in the 1970's thirty Poodle hair and saliva samples were sent to Hawaii to test for allergy their friendliness. Unfortunately, none of these original samples proved to be viable.

After the first successfull mating in 1988 or 1989 between a Poodle and Lab, Mr. Wally Conren bred these Labradoodle to to each other and called the resulting offspring, “Double Doodles.” Finally, he bred the Double Doodles and decided to call call the offspring “Tri Doodles.” The Tri Doodles were the beginning of what we today call the Australian Multi-Generational (or Multi-Gen) Labradoodle.

Today, many years later, the primary reason the Labradoodle is so popular is their non-shedding coat, however people quickly discovered they have two other wonderful traits - their intuitive nature and mellow personality. And as you can guess, once people became aware of these three traits - the Labradoodle’s future was set.

And as a result, these dogs became so adaptable, their intelligence and resolve attracted people and trainers who wanted dogs for sports, guidance, and therapy.
